Zi Wei Dou Shu: Purple Star Astrology for Beginners

If BaZi is the weather map of your elements, Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗数) is the castle diagram: your life arranged into twelve palaces around a courtyard, each garrisoned by symbolic stars. Attributed to the Daoist sage Chen Tuan of the Five Dynasties era, it is the second great pillar of Chinese fate calculation.

The twelve palaces

The chart is a square of twelve sectors named by earthly branch, each governing a domain: the Self palace (temperament), Siblings, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends, Career, Property, Fortune (inner life) and Parents. To read a domain, look at the stars garrisoning its palace.

The stars

Fourteen major stars form the backbone — the emperor star Zi Wei, the strategist Tian Ji, the sun and moon Tai Yang and Tai Yin, the warrior Wu Qu, the benefactor Tian Tong, and so on — joined by minor stars of speed, charm or noise. Each star brightens or dims by palace (its "brightness" grade), and four stars can carry a transformation: Lu (flourish), Quan (power), Ke (fame), Ji (obstruction).

Start with three palaces: the Self palace describes your operating style; the Career palace shows how you build; the Spouse palace sketches partnership. Notice which major stars sit there and whether any carry a transformation — Ji on a Career star says the work path has friction to manage, Lu on a Wealth star says resources flow when you show up.
